On September 29th, Sprint launched its XOHM network in Baltimore.

As we wrote in a Signals Flash! on the following day, we happened to be in the neighborhood to view the festivities and to check out the network for ourselves. In this issue of Signals Ahead we provide our assessment of the network using various throughput measurement tools and real-world applications. We also discuss what we believe are the key differentiators for the XOHM service and how the competition is responding with some of its own initiatives.

Specific topics include the following:

* Takin' it to the Streets. We provide throughput performance results from a number of locations in and around Baltimore, including while indoors, outdoors, stationary and at vehicular speeds. Along with identifying the test locations via Google map we provide the average throughput results in the downlink and the uplink that we measured using FTP and UDP. We compare these results to the advertised data rates and the achieved data rates on other 3G networks, both here and abroad.

* Let's go to the video. Concurrent with our network testing, we also had the opportunity to stream video of our experience to a website using the Livecast Pro software. The upload video stream was done at 300kbps and 500kbps while driving around Baltimore and while simultaneously downloading a file via FTP. These video clips will be posted very soon to our website.

* The differentiators. Some in the industry may erroneously claim that the XOHM network is based on a 4G technology, but even still there are certain key differentiators that the operator can leverage to make its WiMAX strategy a success. One of these differentiators is sustainable, but it only applies under certain conditions. Some of the other differentiators are equally important at the moment but the competing technologies/operators are trying to quickly close the gap and effectively remove many of these advantages.

* Sweet Home Chicago. Following our trip to Baltimore, we headed to the windy city to attend WiMAX World 2008. We present a couple of key data points that crossed our path and we discuss why we believe the perceived femtocell market opportunity as it applies to Mobile WiMAX may be some somewhat overstated.
